About Artful Hands studio and gallery
I have met the owner of Artful Hands studio and gallery, Georgia Rowswell, who had started an in-home gallery to allow local artists to show off their work and find a way to share what art is about to the community. Artful Hands is located 302 East 1st Ave Cheyenne, WY and you can contact the owner, Georgia Rowswell, at 229-546-5183 or email artsygeorgia@yahoo.com.
What is Artful Hands?
In-home gallery or alternative-space gallery about 2 years ago. It kind of coincides with Art, Design, and Dine. I felt like Cheyenne could use an art walk and my art gallery could be a part of Art, Design, and Dine. After I opened this up I saw in a newspaper article in New York Times about other people turning their home space into an art gallery. For a lot of reasons- society is not supporting the arts right now and they don’t always afford big rents to rent big studio spaces for art exhibit, so they find alternative way to reach out to the community and my way was to do it at home and it worked out well. My name is Georgia Rowswell, I am the owner of Artful Hands gallery. We’re open during the art walk or by appointment. I feature my own art, Dave’s art, and some local artists.
What kind of things have you exhibited in the past?
In the past, on a monthly basis, I try to rotate out artists so I have something interesting going on, specifically for the art tour which is every second Thursday of the month. In my last show we had 9 artists on display called “18 Hands” and I had Connie Norman, Josh Eastman, Deborah Britts- ceramics; Sanda Bordson, Nancy McCalla, Amy McHaffy- jewelry; DoPalma, Georgia Rowswell- Multimedia; and Mark Koons- wood. Needless to say the house was full of art. Beyond that just had various artists mostly local. We like to have a variety of media, sometimes have demonstrations, promoting classes, and holding some classes.
What is the goal of the gallery?
Opening the gallery and starting the art walk was to give local artists a place to show their work to raise the profile of art in general and in Cheyenne and to show why they do what they do.
When is the gallery open?
During Art, Design, and Dine art walk every second Thursday of the month, last one is December 2011 and opening again in April 2012, or by appointment. No regular hours so I tell people by chance or by appointment of when they can come in and see the artwork.
How are things organized?
My husband build me some uprights so I can move them around and change the look of the gallery, so those provide a lot of space for 2D art, and he also built some uprisers to go over the wheels for 3D art. The looks of the gallery gets changed up often to keep things fresh.
How can an artist have an exhibit?
So, I like to have an artist exhibit here during the art walk to bring people in, and then I offer a couple more days, 2-3 day shows. If an artist would like to exhibit I would like for them to email some pictures of their works. It’s kind of a jury system where I am looking for variety and quality and a kind of theme. I am thinking about putting on a student show next year.
Next art tour at December 8, 2011
Don’t forget to drop by and enjoy the artwork during this Art, Design, and Dine event! I’ve had a blast looking at, even hearing about mediums that could be used to make paper that I would never have imagined. There are 10 galleries total to choose from during this art walk.
